The stainless steel (or stainless steel) are alloys based on iron and carbon which combine to typical mechanical properties of carbon steels peculiar characteristics of resistance to corrosion. These materials owe their ability to resist corrosion in the presence of alloying elements, mainly chromium, able to passivate, that is, to become covered with a layer of oxides invisible, of a thickness of a few atomic layers (3-5 × 10-7 mm), which protects the underlying metal from the action of external chemical agents. The family of stainless steels has the common feature of having a maximum carbon content of 1, 2% and a minimum value of equal to 11 chromium-12%. If the percentage of binding is high, there is no mention of stainless steel but of austenitic stainless steel alloys.
